(ITC) Computer Short Course Information Technology Certificate Training Course
Course Overview
This 8-week course is for people new to computers. It teaches the basics of how computers work, how to use them, and how to stay safe online. Each week covers a simple topic with fun activities and easy quizzes. No experience is needed!
Course Content:
Week 1: What Is a Computer?
Module 1: Learn what a computer is and its main parts.
- What a computer does (e.g., helps with work, games, internet).
- Main parts: Screen, keyboard, mouse, CPU (the “brain”).
- Types of computers: Laptops, desktops, tablets.
- Turning a computer on and off safely.
Activities:
- Identify parts of a real or pictured computer
- Practice using a mouse and keyboard.
Assessment:
- Quiz on computer parts
- Show how to turn on a computer correctly
Week 2: Using a Computer’s Operating System
Module 2: Get comfortable with the computer’s “control center.”
- What is an operating system? (Like Windows or macOS.)
- Navigating the desktop, icons, and start menu (Windows)
- Using the Dock, Finder, and Launchpad (macOS)
- Opening and closing programs
- Saving and finding files in folders
- Adjusting basic settings: wallpaper, sound, Wi-Fi
Activities:
- Explore Windows and macOS interfaces (hands-on or screenshots)
- Open and close programs, save and find files on both systems
Assessment:
- Demonstrate how to open a program and save a file
- Quiz: Compare Windows vs. macOS features

- Students can confidently identify and use key features of both Windows and macOS.
Week 3: Exploring Software (Microsoft Office, Google Docs & AdobecOS.
Module 3: Learn about programs and applications.
- What software is (apps like games or Notepad).
Common programs:
- What is software? (Apps that help you do tasks).
Office & Cloud Tools:
- Microsoft Word and Excel basics
- Google Docs and Google Sheets create and share documents online
Creative Tools (Adobe Suite):
- What Adobe software does (Photoshop for images, Acrobat for PDFs, Illustrator for design)
- Understanding file formats (.DOCX, .PDF, .JPG, .AI)
- Free vs. paid software (e.g., Paint vs. Photoshop)
- Installing and uninstalling apps safely
Activities:
- Write and format a short note using Google Docs
- Save a document as a PDF using Adobe Acrobat
- Open an image in Adobe Photoshop and apply a basic edit
- Compare saving in local vs. cloud storage
Assessment:
- Submit a Google Docs file and a saved PDF
- Quiz: Match software types with their functions

- Students will know how to create, edit, and share documents using Microsoft Office and Google Docs, and recognize popular Adobe tools for creative work.
Week 4: First Steps in Coding
Module 4: Try simple coding to make the computer do something.
- What coding is (giving instructions to a computer).
- Easy coding with Scratch or Python
- Concepts: Commands, steps, and outputs.
- Writing a “Hello, World!” program
Activities:
- Use Scratch to make a simple animation
- Write a short Python program in an online editor
Assessment:
- Show a working mini program
- Quiz on coding basics
Week 5: The Internet and Staying Connected
Module 5: Understand the internet and how to use it.
- What is the internet? (Connects computers worldwide.)
- Using a web browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox).
- Searching the web safely with Google.
- Understanding Wi-Fi and online connectivity
- Bookmarking and history basics
Activities:
- Search for information online.
- Bookmark a safe, educational website.
Assessment:
- Demonstrate an internet search
- Quiz on internet and Wi-Fi basics
Week 6: Saving and Organizing Files
Module 6: Learn how to save and find things on your computer.
- What are files? (Like photos, documents, videos.)
- Common file types: JPG, TXT, PDF, DOCX
- Organizing files with folders
- Backing up with USB drives or cloud storage (Google Drive, iCloud)
Activities:
- Create a folder and save files in it
- Upload and share a document on Google Drive
Assessment:
- Show an organized folder system
- Quiz on file types and saving options
Week 7: Staying Safe Online
Module 7: Learn how to use computers safely.
- Recognizing online dangers (viruses, phishing, scams)
- Creating strong passwords
- Spotting unsafe websites or emails
- Keeping software and antivirus updated
- Understanding safe sharing and privacy settings
Activities:
- Create and test a strong password
- Identify safe vs. unsafe websites
Assessment:
- Quiz on online safety habits
- Demonstrate secure browsing practices
Week 8: Fun with Computers and What’s Next
Module 7: Explore cool things you can do with computers and plan your learning journey.
- Fun uses: Games, music, video editing, digital art
- Exploring new technologies: Robots, AI, virtual reality
- Review of Weeks 1–7.
- Ideas for learning more (e.g., free online courses).
Activities:
- Share your favorite tech activity
- Create a “Next Steps” plan for continued learning
Assessment:
- Final quiz and self-reflection activity
